The Other Side

We all know that sex trafficking is a horrible crime that is being committed around the world. Most of the stories that are published on the topic are about the bust of a brothel, which it can be agreed is a good thing. But doesn't anyone ever wonder what happens to these girls after they are released? After searching through countless articles, I kept seeing the same thing over and over again. A prostitution ring is busted, this is how many girls were released, these are the men awaiting trial, and then the article ends. Yes, may of the girls are deported, but you never hear what happens to them after that. When I finally came across two uplifting articles, I had an issue with each one.

The first on was called Charity Helping the Women of Moldova. It's about a charity in Moldova that houses young women and educates them on the dangers of being trafficked. It also provides the girls with a sense of community and helps them create better lives for themselves. My issue was that this article was deep into my search on BBC.com. It took me a while to find it and it's fairly short, only 153 words. But to it's credit, it dod have a short four minute audio interview with a few of the girls and the manager of the safe house.

The other article I found on UNICEF's website of all places. The article called Rescuing Victims of Child Sex Trafficking in the United Kingdom, focuses on a girl, who had her identity withheld, who was trafficked t an older man and then later left on the street. The girl who is called "Margaret," has now become an advocate for the better treatment of people who have been sex trafficked. Honestly, I never would have looked on UNICEFS's site to find a story about sex trafficking.

I just think that the media as a whole should include more stories like these two. These two stories expose the a different side of the what happens to some of these girls after they are trafficked and it shine slight on what some people are doing to prevent girls from being trafficked. I'm just saying that not every story needs to be about a bust. Maybe if more stories like these were out there, more people would act and try to put a stop on the horror that is sex trafficking.
